Mourners urged to get permission before scattering ashes

SANParks

The Table Mountain National Park in Cape Town has urged members of the public to send a formal request to the park if they want to scatter the ashes of their deceased loved ones.

SANParks says the park is protected under the National Environmental Management-Protected areas Act 57 of 2003 and a World Heritage Site under the Cape Floral Kingdom.

The park says any urns or shrines found buried or placed in any area will be confiscated and handed over to the South African Police Services.

The scattering of ashes is allowed in designated areas but permission must be obtained, in writing.

Visitors are therefore requested to respect the rules of the park.

The scattering of ashes and memorial plaques has long been a topic of interest, especially in Gqeberha where some residents have been accused of hijacking memorial benches.
