Stellenbosch University says in light of the events of the past week, including the alleged rape of a 19-year-old student, and the impact it has had on the mental health and emotional state of students, it has decided to postpone the first semester examination period with one week.
The institution says on its Facebook page this follows consultations with the leadership of Faculties and students.
Examinations for the first semester will now start on Monday, 30 May.
The university says the deadline for assessments will also be extended by one week.
It says this will not impact the start of the second semester, which still begins on 18 July.
It's alleged that the rape incident took place on Tuesday evening at a residence in Victoria Street.
According to the University, the 19-year-old woman was accompanied to the hospital, where she was examined and received medication, and primary counselling.
The suspect will be suspended from his residence pending investigations.
The student appeared in the Stellenbosch Magistrates Court on Thursday where he was charged on two counts of rape.
He was granted bail of R1 000 with conditions that he must not be in contact with the complainant.
His case was postponed until 29 June 2022 for further investigation.
This is the second student to be suspended for misconduct, following the suspension of Theuns du Toit, who is being investigated by police after he urinated on another student, Babalo Ndwayana's study material.
