The KwaZulu Natal Department of Cooperative Governance said on Sunday that evacuations had already taken place in the province amid heavy rains.
The provincial government's disaster management committee met on Saturday after the South African Weather Services issued a Level 10 weather warning for parts of the province.
It is the highest weather warning possible.
In some parts of KZN, water levels on the roads and rivers reached dangerously high levels and are projected to continue to rise.
Snow warnings have also been issued for some parts of the province.
"The current rains are compounding an already dire situation due to the recent floods, especially in KZN province, wherein the ground is still saturated and can therefore easily be flooded," says the department's Lungi Mtshali.
"Government, through the departments such as Social Development, Defence Force, South African Police Service, and other social partners are working with disaster management teams across the province to monitor the high-risk areas, determine the extent and level of risk, evaluate damages where they exist and provide immediate relief to needy communities".
Mtshali says they are concerned about the impact that these rains are likely to have on communities.
