Steep fuel price hike looms

The retail price of all grades of petrol will increase by 41 cents a litre from next Wednesday.

Diesel with 0.05 percent sulphur would go up by 17.8 cents a litre wholesale, and diesel with 0.005 percent sulphur by 17.8 cents a litre.

The wholesale price of Illuminating paraffin would go up by 26 cents a litre, and the Single Maximum National Retail Price (SMNRP) would rise by 34 cents a litre.

The maximum retail price for LP GAS would go up by 73 cents a kilogram.

Energy Department spokesperson, Raphi Maake, said "during the period under review, the average international product prices of petrol, diesel, and illuminating paraffin had increased."

"The average rand/US dollar exchange rate weakened when compared to the previous period and this increased the contribution to the basic fuels price on petrol, diesel, and illuminating paraffin," he said.
