The state says the death of former PE model Reeva Steenkamp was premeditated murder.
This, in a day of drama at the Pretoria magistrate's court where paralympian Oscar Pistorius wept uncontrollably, prompting magistrate Desmond Nair to appeal to him to calm down.
Nair also raised concern that he may be receiving preferential treatment by being held in the Brooklyn police cells until his next court appearance on Tuesday.
Earlier he ruled against live broadcasts of the court proceedings.
However, he did allow photographs to be taken when the court was not in session, as well as audio of argument and judgment.
Twenty-six-year-old Pistorius was taken into custody on Thursday after Steenkamp had been shot four times at his luxury home in Pretoria.
