State of Disaster declared over energy crisis

The energy crisis was top of the President's agenda

GCIS -parliament

President Cyril Ramaphosa declared a State of Disaster on Thursday night to deal with South Africa's crippling energy crisis.

He made the pronouncement during his State of the Nation address in Cape Town.

After the EFF deployed its traditional disruptive tactics, and ultimately marched out of Parliament in an all-too-predictable huff, the President announced that the State of Disaster he was declaring would allow his government to deal with the very real threat of the energy crisis.

He said he would be appointing a Minister of Energy whose sole purpose would be to deal 24/7 with South Africa's energy needs.

The State of Disaster will ensure that critical infrastructure, such as hospitals and water infrastructure are exempt from load shedding.

The President said there were no easy solutions but that restoring energy security was Government's primary priority.

He acknowledged that load shedding is impeding South Africa's economic recovery and that the country's people want actions and solutions.
