The Student Representative Council (SRC) of the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits), together with its "constituents", have embarked on hunger strike.
The hunger strike follows protests on campus on Monday, which the SRC alleges were precipitated by management reneging on agreed upon concessions relating to student accommodation and registration of students with historical debt.
The SRC further claims that Wits responded to their shutdown by deploying private security on campus to violate, victimise and intimidate students.
The Student leadership says they were also informed that the University would deploy police on campus.
The statement further states that there are students, who are academically deserving, who have to sleep in libraries because they are unable to register.
Students will, therefore, embark on a hunger strike.
