SPCA needs Government to intervene in Pitbull crisis

The SPCA has called on Government to intervene in what they call a national crisis regarding Pitbulls in the country.

Spokesperson Keshvi Nair says Pitbulls are being surrendered in large numbers and the SPCA simply does not have the resources to cover the cost of this National Campain without support from relevant role-players.

She says in communities where owners do not want to give up their dogs, residents have started to take matters into their own hands as reports have been received of dogs being poisoned, stabbed, beaten and set alight in retaliation.

A national campaign calling for a ban on Pitbulls has gained traction after another child was mauled to death in the Free State over the weekend.

Nair says they have formally asked the Department of Agriculture, Rural Development and Land Reform to enquire what their plan and strategy is to address this issue, given that it is their responsibility.

The debate around Pitbulls has reached a boiling point on social media.

According to the Organisation BanPitBulls.org, the following countries have either banned the breed completely or placed strict conditions on their ownership:

Argentina; Parts of Australia; Parts of Austria; Bavaria; Belarus; Parts of Belgium; Bermuda; Parts of Brazil; Parts of China; Parts of Canada; Denmark; Ecuador; Finland; France; Germany; Guyana; Ireland; Israel; Italy; Parts of Japan; Latvia; Liechtenstein; Malaysia; Malta; Norway; Poland; Portugal; Puerto Rico; Romania; Russia; Singapore; Spain; Switzerland; Turkey; UEA; Ukraine; United Kingdom; Venezuela and New Zealand.
