Police Minister Bheki Cele said that they have a "solid" case against the five suspects who were arrested six years after Bafana Bafana goalkeeper, Senzo Meyiwa, was murdered.
Cele announced the breakthrough in the "cold case" on Monday in the company of National Police Commissioner, General Khehla Sitole.
"Despite criticism from some quarters we have always maintained that those suspected of this crime would be found and brought to book," Cele said.
He said a cold case team was established to probe the Meyiwa murder and this attracted media attention and leaks touching on some aspects of the investigation.
Cele said information about the case may have been leaked to derail the investigation.
Despite this, he said he was "happy to announce that there's been a breakthrough in the Senzo Meyiwa case. The first five suspects were arrested between 8 am and 10 am (on Monday) in Gauteng and Kwazulu Natal."
"These arrests are a result of a multi-disciplinary, integrated approach to this investigation which is working closely with the Director of Public Prosecutions. The SAPS and the prosecution team are confident that we have a water-tight case against all five suspects," Minister Cele said.
They are due to appear in court soon, adding that more arrests cannot be ruled out.
Meyiwa was shot and killed in Ekhuruleni in 2014 at a house belonging to his girlfriend, Kelly Khumalo.
