So called "hippo hunter" granted bail on attempted murder charge

An elderly man who is facing a charge of attempted murder for shooting at a couple who were fishing has been granted bail.

Seventy-seven-year-old Paul Hendrick Stephanus van Zyl, who is a farm owner in Lephalale appeared briefly in the Local Magistrates Court on Thursday where he was granted bail of R1 000.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mamphaswa Seabi says a 38-year-old woman, Ramokone Linah, was fishing with her boyfriend at the Mogol River on Tuesday afternoon when she was shot and wounded in her left arm.

It is alleged that the man told police that he was shooting at animals and believed the couple to be a hippopotamus.

Police seized two rifles, a revolver, a pistol and two airguns during the arrest.

The matter was postponed until the 18th of May for further investigation.

The spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in Limpopo Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi says the accused is the owner of the Ruitspruit farm where the incident took place.

She says the State did not oppose bail but it is their case that Van Zyl unlawfully and intentionally attempted to kill the victim.
