Free State police opened culpable homicide dockets following two accidents on Friday that claimed a total of six lives.
Police spokesperson, Sergeant Mahlomola Kareli says one accident at around 03:45 when reports were received of a head-on collision between two min-buses about 10 kilometres towards Bloemfontein.
"All emergency personnel were dispatched to the scene and it was discovered that five people succumbed to their injuries at the scene and about 11 were rushed to different hospitals in Bloemfontein. Three passengers and both drivers of the minibus taxis died on the scene," he said.
Kareli said the circumstances surrounding the accident will form part of the ongoing investigation.
He said one person was reportedly killed in a multi-vehicle pile-up on the N3 involving four cars and a truck.
Free State Police Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Baile Motswenyane, has appealed to all road users to exercise patience and respect each other on the road.
