A former police officer based in Gauteng was sentenced to six life terms following a massacre in KwaZulu Natal on the 11th of October 2014.
The 30-year-old Lungisani Mgaga and his accomplice, who was sentenced last year, opened fire on a Mercedes Benz with five occupants driving in a street in Pietermaritzburg. One person was killed and four others wounded.
Then, less than an hour after the attack the men opened fire at another vehicle with five occupants who were waiting at a car wash.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane said in this attack four people were killed and one wounded.
Mgaga used his service pistol to commit the crimes. He was arrested in 2015 and remained in custody.
The Pietermaritzburg High Court sentenced him to six life terms for the murders plus another 50 years for the five counts of attempted murders.
His accomplice, Themba Mvelase (32) was sentenced to life in prison last year.
