Brett Herron, Cape Town's embattled mayoral committee member for transport, resigned from his post and the Democratic Alliance with immediate effect on Thursday.
The resignation comes two days after city council speaker Dirk Smit laid criminal charges against Herron and Patricia de Lille, who stepped down as mayor on Wednesday, in line with a council resolution based on the Bowmans report on alleged high-level corruption in the running of the city.
Herron was scathing about the DA as he announced his decision to the media in Salt River, describing the party as "a lost cause".
He is the eight councillor from the City of Cape Town to resign.
Herron took to Twitter to explain some of the reasons for his resignation.
