Shops and buildings looted in Swellendam

Protesters have looted shops and set buildings alight in Swellendam, but police said on Friday morning that the situation was under control.

Western Cape police spokesperson, Andre Traut, says they are monitoring the situation.

According to reports on Friday, the situation in the area was tense and roads were blockaded with rocks and burning tyres.

Shops were being set alight, protesters looted a bottle store and a butchery was torched in Swellendam on Thursday night and Friday morning.

Police had to use rubber bullets and stun grenades to disperse protesters.

The N2 has again been blockaded with rocks and burning tyres.

Western Cape government spokesperson, Zak Mbhele.

"Swellendam is still a hot spot in the unrest in the province so that's been very closely and actively monitored and watched. The N2 since this morning has been re-opened but there is a chance that if the protest action continues it might need to be closed again. The trigger for the Swellendam protest is around local unhappiness of the appointment of a new municipal manager" Mbhele said.
