The police have arrested 30 people and issued thousands of fines in the recent wave of unrest during which close on 20 staff members of the City of Cape Town have been injured.

The City of Cape Town’s law enforcement services have spent the past week dealing with an increase in the number of violent protests and related criminality in various parts of the metro.

Protests are linked to land invasions, but also other service delivery issues have taken place in Delft, Khayelitsha, Mfuleni and over the past few days, in Kraaifontein.

In the past week, the law enforcement agencies responded to 48 protests in which 18 staff members were injured and seven vehicles were damaged. They arrested 12 suspects.

Mayoral committee member for safety and security, JP Smith,  said the City of Cape Town respects the right of individuals to protest, but there is no justification for the violence the Mother City has experienced in recent weeks.
