Seven suspects are due to appear in court this week following their arrest for being in possession of anti-retroviral drugs worth over R1.9m.
Police spokesperson, Brigadier Motantsi Makhele, said the arrests were made on Saturday after police received a tip-off that the suspects were coming from Gauteng Province to Kroonstad with the aim of selling the ARV’s to a potential buyer from Welkom.
“They were found in possession of 1272 containers of ARV tablets to the estimated value of R1 908 000. The tablets and a Chevrolet Cruz were confiscated,” he said.
Makhele said, “four suspects are from Sebokeng in Vereeniging, one Lesotho citizen staying in Welkom, one from Phuthaditjhaba and the other one from Theunissen.”
He said the five men and two women, aged between 31 and 39, will be charged with contravening the Medicines and Related Substances Act when they appear in the Kroonstad Magistrate Court.
