A 53-year-old police Sergeant and his 35-year-old son-in-law are behind bars after allegedly stealing more than 50 police vehicle batteries in the Free-State.
Spokesperson, Brigadier Motantsi Makhele, says the men were arrested in Phillipolis on Thursday after members were alerted of theft by one of their members working at the State garage.
Investigations revealed the officer and his unemployed son-in-law stole 32 brand new vehicle batteries that were collected from Bloemfontein and were to be used in the Phillipolis policing area.
Brig Makhele says this comes after they recently sold at least 20 used batteries at a scrapyard dealer.
He says the men were arrested on charges of suspected stolen goods and theft of state property.
They are expected to appear in the Bethulie Magistrate court soon.
