Former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper, Senzo Meyiwa, was killed in an organised hit six years ago to the day.
This is the contention of former state prosecutor, Advocate Gerrie Nel who heads Afriforum's private prosecution's unit, acting on behalf of the Meyiwa family.
Nel told a media briefing on Monday that they had received a comprehensive briefing from police investigators on the arrest of five suspects in connection with the goalkeeper's murder in the Ekhuruleni home of his girlfriend, Kelly Khumalo.
He said they learned that robbery was not the motive for Meyiwa's murder and that the mastermind was not among those arrested.
Meyiwa's brother, Sifiso, told the briefing that the family was happy about the arrests, but still in shock at the latest developments.
"We remain anxious that the mastermind was not arrested," he said.
AfriForum meanwhile praised the South African Police Service for the breakthrough.
The civil rights organisation also highlighted the fact that the SAPS was willing to involve Adv. Gerrie Nel and AfriForum’s Private Prosecution Unit in their investigation during the past few months.
