National Prosecuting Authority

The Self-proclaimed Prophet Shepherd Bushiri and his wife Mary appeared in the Pretoria High Court earlier on Monday where they are facing charges of fraud, money laundering and the contravention of the Prevention of Organised Crime Act to an amount of R15 million.

Bushiri and his wife were arrested in February last year and are each out on bail of R100 000.
The case has since been transferred to trial and the matter was postponed to the 16th of October for a pre-trial conference.
The couple is also accused of contravening South Africa’s exchange control regulations by paying about R19 million in cash for a private jet.

During their appearances at the Specialised Commercial Crimes Court last year, thousands of Bushiri’s followers who refer to the preacher as

“Major 1” picketed outside the court, pleading his innocence.
