A group of divers onboard a local dive charter boat on the Atlantic Seabord in Cape Town requested emergency assistance on Saturday after a seal bit several divers.

Spokesperson for the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Craig Lambinon says paramedics and Health officials assisted in the distress call from Oudekraal.

He says several tourists were also on board the vessel.

Lambinon says while in the water some divers were bitten by a seal.

A Portuguese lady was transported to a hospital for bite puncture wounds and is in stable condition. At the same time, a South African diver, who did not require hospitalisation, was advised to go to an emergency room for broad-spectrum antibiotics, rabies and tetanus treatment as a precaution.

Lambinon says a Brazilian man, a French man and a woman as well as another South African man, sustained minor scrape bite wounds and were given the same advice to go to the ER as a precautionary measure.

The City of Cape Town authorities, the Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries, and the SPCA have been alerted to the incident.

Bathers in the Oudekraal area and those along the Atlantic Seabord were urged to be aware and cautious.
