SAPS task team hunt down KZN taxi killers

National Police Commissioner, General Khehla Sitole has activated a 72-hour action plan following the mass murder of 11 taxi drivers in Kwazulu Natal.

General Sitole said on Sunday that a team consisting of specialised units within the SAPS, including Crime Intelligence, the Directorate for Priority Crimes Investigation (HAWKS), SAPS Detectives as well as the Special Task Force, has been established to trace and apprehend those responsible for these killings.

Eleven taxi drivers from Gauteng who were travelling home from a funeral in KwaZulu-Natal were ambushed by gunmen on the R-74  between Colenso and Weenen.

Four people were critically wounded while two other people in the taxi escaped unhurt.

"The Acting Provincial Commissioner of Kwa-Zulu Natal, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi and his management team are overseeing the investigation into these murders. We will wait for the investigation to advance before speculating on a motive," said General Khehla Sitole.

Anyone who might have information that will assist police to arrest these senseless killings is encouraged to contact their nearest police station or phone the SAPS Crime Hot-Line on 08600 10111.

Callers may remain anonymous and all information will be treated with the strictest confidence.
