The South African Police Service has lashed out what it says is a fake news story about the National Police Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Kehla Sitole.
The social media report alleges that the top cop had made derogatory comments about white South Africans saying that they had brought crime to the country.
But, Sitole's spokesperson, Brigadier Vish Naidoo, says the comments attributed to the National Commissioner were false and aimed at portraying him in a negative light.
He's cautioned social media users about spreading false information and urged the public to ignore the story.
"The SAPS can state categorically that the utterances attributed to the national commissioner are untrue," Naidoo said.
