Gauteng police arrested five suspects believed to be members of a cash-in-transit gang on charges of conspiracy to commit armed robbery.
Police spokesperson, Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, said a multi-disciplinary task team acted on information about the suspects who were allegedly planning a robbery in the Eden Park area.
She said several safe houses were identified and a “takedown” operation conducted on Saturday.
Nevhuhulwi said five suspects were arrested at a house in Eden Park where police also confiscated two rifles, a pistol and ammunition.
“All firearms were unlicensed. Further search led to the recovery of two vehicles which were established as hijacked after being processed,” she said.
A suspected hijacked vehicle was also found at a second house in Alberton.
“The five suspects were arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit armed robbery, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition and possession of hijacked vehicles,” Colonel Nvhuhulwi said.
They are due to appear in court soon.
