SAPS destroyed drugs worth over R500 million

SAPS

The South African Police Service has destroyed confiscated drugs valued at R550 million during another drug destruction operation in Gauteng.

National police commissioner, General Fannie Masemola, presided over the operation in Olifantsfontein on Wednesday.

SAPS said that the drugs were seized during ongoing operations in several provinces, including the Eastern Cape, Gauteng, and Kwazulu Natal.

"Heroin worth a street value of R28 million where vehicles traveling from Mozambique to SA were stopped and searched and the heroin was found concealed in the vehicle compartments. One accused was sentenced to five years' imprisonment," a police statement said.

It added that drugs confiscated found at OR TAMBO International Airport were valued at R17 million

"It is important to note that the drugs that are being destroyed are identified through court orders, and illustrating the finalisation of cases," SAPS said.

Authorities said the drugs were destroyed following a thorough process that included the conclusion of court cases.
