SANParks sells off rhino to private reserves

SA National Parks says its selling about 286 white rhino to private buyers as part of efforts to protect the species from poaching.

SANParks outgoing chairperson, Kuseni Dlamini, said yesterday that a tender was issued for the sale of white rhino to private land owners who fulfil certain requirements, including habit and security.

He said the tender process was currently in the adjudication phase with a team that included auditors from KPMG, national treasury and scientists currently assessing properties to ensure they provided a suitable and secure habitat.

Dlamini said this was part of a translocation programme started last October to move some rhino out of poaching hotspots in the Kruger National Park.

Meanwhile, The Herald reports that an already dehorned rhino was poached for its stump on the Tyityaba Game Reserve near the Kei River this week.
The reserve has lost five rhino to poaching since February.
