Cosatu’s national spokesperson Patrick Craven has resigned from the labour federation in protest of the decision to fire general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi.
In reference to the special central committee meeting which decided to fire Vavi, Craven said he could stay on and support the indefensible.
While Craven is the first prominent leader to leave after the controversial axing by the Cosatu faction headed by the labour federation president, Sdumo Dlamini, there are seven Cosatu affiliates that support Vavi.
It is expected that these unions will follow Vavi.
However, at this stage is appears that the General Secretary will challenge his dismissal and possibly even take legal action against what he believes is defamation and libel from his opponents.
