SANDF rejects report of soldiers surrendering to rebels in DRC

The South African Defence Force has rejected a US media report that two soldiers had surrendered to M23 rebels in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The Washington-based publication, National Security News, said it was reported that two SANDF soldiers deployed with the SADEC mission in Congo, were now being held hostage.

However, in a statement on Wednesday, the SANDF rejected what is said was a convoluted report in the online publication.

Spokesperson, Siphiwe Dlamini, stated categorically that all SANDF members deployed in the DRC have been accounted for.

"The convoluted article published by the faceless Washington correspondent is dismissed with the contempt it deserves.

"This is not the first time such unfounded and baseless news articles have been written about the SANDF since its deployment in the DRC under SAMIDRC," Dlamini said.

He said the SANDF as the authority for the deployed members "shall at all times inform the South African public about the situation and safety of its members in the DRC."
