The South Africa Medical Association has raised its concern about the high rate of crime in the country after its Chairperson, Dr. Mvuyisi Mzukwa was attacked and stabbed on the side of the road on Saturday.
SAMA said he was returning home from the King Shaka Airport after attending a SAMA Board meeting.
"He sustained multiple stab wounds on his chest. He was discovered by the Metro Police and assisted to reach the emergency department at a nearby hospital," said SAMA CEO Dr. Vusumuzi Nhlapho.
"He is currently stable and is recovering at an Intensive Care Unit," he said.
Dr. Nhlapo said SAMA was concerned about the high levels of crime in the country, with the latest statistics showing an increase in hijackings compared to 2021.
He said the Association denounces this increase in crime, adding that this "latest attack shows that no one is spared of this scourge."
Deputy Health Minister, Dr. Sibongile Dhlomo, also visited Mzukwa in hospital on Sunday and said he was happy to find him on the road to recovery.
