Attempts to refloat the stricken vessel Kiani Satu are expected to get underway early on Tuesday.
The 165 metre long bulk rice carrier ran aground at Walker Point at Buffels Bay near Knysna last week after reporting engine trouble.
The vessel is carrying 250 tons of heavy fuel oil and 80 tons of gas oil, which is now leaking, prompting authorities to erect protective booms at two estuaries near Knysna.
The SA Maritime Safety Authority said on Monday that the Joint Operations Committee overseeing the salvaging of the vessel is assessing the extent of the oil slick that is leaking from the stricken vessel.
Operations are also underway to pump the oil from the damaged tank into another more structurally sound tank within the vessel.
