Saftu rejects public sector wage offer

Twitter: @SAFTU_media

The South African Federation of Trade Unions, SAFTU, has rejected the government's 3% wage offer for public servants.

Unions are demanding an 8% increase for teachers, police, traffic officers, correctional officers, nurses, social workers, and all public servants, and are now preparing for national strike action.

The government offered 3% during the Public Service Coordinating Bargaining Council on Friday.

But, the union says accepting a 3% increase on the baseline would mean that public service workers would have lost real increases to their wages and pensions for three consecutive years since 2020.

"Considering that this fiscal framework is planned for the next 3 years, public servants are still going to lose dearly in wages and pensions unless they fight back,” says spokesperson, Trevor Shaku.

SAFTU is calling on the public service workers across all unions and federations to reject the government's offer.
