The case against 63-year-old Harry Knoesen who is charged with high treason will resume in the Mpumalanga High Court sitting in Middelburg on Thursday.
He is also charged with incitement to carry out terrorist attacks in South Africa, soliciting support, recruiting persons to carry out terrorist attacks in South Africa, and the unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.
Knoesen was charged along with brothers, Errol and Eric Abrams who had pleaded guilty to the charges and were jailed for an effective eight years for their role in the terror plot.
The State alleges, among other things, that he had recruited people to join the National Christian Resistance Movement, also known as the Crusaders, and appointed himself as Commander-in-Chief, giving himself the rank of General.
It’s alleged that the group plotted attacks on identified state targets, including attacks in township areas.
Knoesen, who has pleaded not guilty to the charges against him, was arrested at his residence in Middelburg in November 2019, where the weapon and ammunition were seized.
The State is expected to lead further evidence after four witnesses had already testified in the trial.
