The Pietermaritzburg High Court has sentenced 36-year-old Siyanda Khumalo to two life terms after he pleaded guilty to the murder of two children in the Tin Town area of Gamalakhe near Port Shepstone.
The National Prosecuting Authority said Khumalo also pleaded guilty to a charge of arson for setting fire to his girlfriend’s place.
NPA spokesperson, Natasha Kara said Khumalo was in a relationship with Vamisile Zenda, who had two sons of her own, Amkela Zenda (14) and Sandiso Zenda (6).
She said the couple also had one child between them but the child had died some time ago.
She said after their relationship had soured and Zenda obtained a protection order against Khumalo, he carried out the attack.
Kara said he killed the teenager with a bush knife and then set the house alight while Zenda’s other child was asleep, killing both of them.
Khumalo was sentenced on Monday to life imprisonment on each of the murder charges and eight years imprisonment for arson.
The sentences will run concurrently.
