Health Minister, Dr. Zweli Mkhize, says the sale of the Astra Zeneca vaccine has been completed.
In a statement yesterday, he said all member states identified by the African Union as recipients, were compliant and obtained all regulatory approval.
Mkhize said the full purchase price of the vaccines had been received by the government.
The Minister said AU and South African teams then ensured that all logistical arrangements are in place for the shipment of the vaccines.
Mkhize said the first batch of vaccines that are being delivered will benefit 9 member states. "The balance will be collected this week to be delivered to 5 other countries."
South Africa acquired more than 1 million doses of the vaccine, later found to be ineffective in preventing mild Covid19 infection due to the South African variant.
