The country's school history curriculum will undergo a complete overhaul.
Basic Education Minister, Angie Motshekga, has appointed the same task team that recommended that history is made a compulsory subject to complete the work within two years.
She says the curriculum needs to be more Afrocentric, representative and relevant to South African learners.
Minister Motshekga says the reappointment of the Ministerial Task Team under Professor Sifiso Ndlovu, is the next step towards decolonisation of the country's education system.
Education Ministry spokesperson, Elijah Mhlanga says the task team will be doing the actual work of reviewing the content of the curriculum that is being used in textbooks.
The team will then create the material for Grade 4-12.
He says the implementation will start in 2019 into 2021.
