Statistics SA says the country's official unemployment rate during the third quarter of 2023 decreased by 0,7% to 31,9%.
Stats SA released the Quarterly Labour Force Survey on Tuesday.
Chief Director: Labour Statistics, Desiree Manamela said changes in employment and unemployment numbers during the third quarter resulted in the official unemployment rate decreasing from 32.6% in the second quarter of this year, to 31.9% in the third quarter.
The Stats SA data shows that the number of employed persons increased by 399,000 to 16.7 million, surpassing the pre-Covid level of 16,4 million.
The number of unemployed persons decreased by 72 000 to 7.8 million during the same quarter.
The Statistician-General, Risenga Maluleke said the number of people who were not economically active for reasons other than discouragement, decreased by 160,000 to 13.1 million.
