Health Minister, Dr Zweli Mkhize has confirmed that South Africa had recorded its highest daily spike in Covid-19 cases on Friday, after 9 063 new infections were reported in the past 24 hours, bringing the total to 177 124.
A total of 2 952 people have died of the virus after 108 new deaths were recorded on Friday.
Mkhize said a further 58 deaths were reported in the Western Cape, 28 in North West, 10 in KwaZulu-Natal, 8 in the Eastern Cape and 3 in the Northern Cape.
The Eastern Cape has recorded 32 157 cases with 459 deaths.
The mortality rate is 1.7 percent despite the increase in numbers and recoveries is 86,298, which translates to a recovery rate of 48,7 percent.
