South Africa has recorded 17 more COVID-19-related deaths, bringing the total number of fatalities to 178.
Health Minister, Zweli Mkhize announced on Friday evening that the total number of cases in the country had increased to 8 895 - after 663 new coronavirus cases were reported in the past 24 hours - the biggest one-day spike to date.
76% of the new cases were reported in the Western Cape, while the Eastern Cape contributed 9% bringing the total in these provinces to 4 497 and 989 respectively.
"Regrettably, we report 17 more Covid-19 related deaths: three from Eastern Cape, three from Gauteng, two from KZN and nine from Western Cape," Mkhize said.
The Minister said he would be visiting the two provinces next week.
A total of 307,752 tests have been conducted to date with 15,599 tests done in the past 24 hours.
