SA goes three weeks without load shedding

Eskom has entered it's 23rd day without load shedding - following the official opening of unit 6 of the Medupi power station.

It was commissioned by President Jacob Zuma on Sunday after being synchronised onto the national grid and a period of testing.

Eskom says during this period, unit 6 had been able to alleviate pressure on the national electricity system, helping to either avoid load shedding or minimising its severity.

At the Medupi ceremony, President Zuma said the country had waited a long time for the commissioning of Unit 6.

Meanwhile: Energy expert Chris Yelland says the opening of Medupi has been long overdue.

However: He believes maintenance at Koeberg could leave Eskom with another challenge...

Eskom is set to take 900 megawatts of power from the Koeberg Power station offline this week.

The station's unit two is being refuelled and will undergo maintenance.
