A South African fugitive arrested in Brazil in June will finally be extradited to the country on Friday to face a charge of murder.
The 39-year-old Gerhard Janse van Vuuren is accused of killing his 25-year-old ex-girlfriend Andrea Venter, outside her complex in Johannesburg in December 2011.
Janse van Vuuren tried to commit suicide at the crime scene but failed and was subsequently arrested and appeared in court where was eventually granted bail after his third attempt.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Vish Naidoo says the accused fled the country just four days before his murder trial was due to start.
He was eventually nabbed in Rio de Janeiro by Brazilian police who worked together with Interpol in Pretoria as well as the National Prosecuting Authority.
Janse van Vuuren was first arrested by Brazilian police in 2013 for having false documentation but was released two years later after spending a brief time in prison.
Naidoo says the accused will land at the OR Tambo International Airport at 1 pm on Friday, accompanied by an investigation team from Interpol.
He will appear in court soon where he will face additional charges.
