A man from Wilderness who was held in a prison in Equatorial Guinea for two years has spoken about his ordeal during a skype press conference that was hosted by the George Herald Newspaper in George yesterday.
The 49 year old Daniel Janse van Rensburg said he thought he had the deal of a lifetime when he agreed on an aviation contract worth millions with an Equatorial Guinea businessman but ended up in jail after being arrested and accused of stealing money.
Daniel told the media about his horrific ordeal in the Black Beach prison despite South African diplomatic efforts to obtain his release.
He said in the time he was there, he was only allowed two phone calls to his family in South Africa and On several occasions his hopes to return to his country were raised but he wasn't released.
Despite the court ruling that found Daniel not guilty of any wrongdoing, the former Malabo mayor wanted R1 million before releasing his prisoner.
After negotiations he was eventually released and returned to the Garden Route last weekend.
