The Democratic Alliance says AbaThembu King, Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo's party membership will be cancelled following the Supreme Court of Appeal's ruling that upheld charges of assault, arson, kidnapping and defeating the ends of justice with a sentence of 12 years against the King.
The DA says in a brief statement this is in accordance with it's Constitution, which expressly stipulates that membership to the party will be revoked if someone is "found guilty of any offence listed in Schedule 1, 2, 5, 6 or 7 of the Criminal Procedure Act."
The DA says it is committed to a society where the Rule of Law is applied fairly and consistently and that anyone found to be in breach of it must be held responsible.
The Eastern Cape king has been convicted for disciplining a group of people by torching their home, administering corporal punishment and kidnapping the family of a man who failed to present himself before his court.
The Supreme Court of Appeals heard his case on the 21st of August, before sentencing him on Thursday morning.
Meanwhile, the office of the ANC chief whip wants DA-MP Dianne Kohler Barnard fired from Parliament, following a post she shared on Facebook praising PW Botha.
Spokesperson Moloto Mothapo says they are outraged, but not surprised, by yet another DA public representative's shameless racism and nostalgic endorsement of the apartheid era rule.
Democratic Alliance leader Mmusi Maimane earlier today said the party would take disciplinary action against Kohler Barnard for the Facebook post.
She shared a post on Facebook two weeks ago about KwaZulu-Natal Hawks boss Johan Booysen, but said she failed to notice that in the middle of the post it said: "Please come back PW Botha - you were far more honest than any of these ANC rogues, and you provided a far better service to the public..."
