Two armed robbers found themselves trapped inside a walk-in safe after attempting to make off with a large sum of money from a supermarket at the Sky City Mall in Vereeniging, Gauteng police said on Monday.
Police spokesman Lungelo Dlamini said a quick-thinking employee locked the two in the safe during the robbery on Sunday night.
He said they were left behind by their accomplices who fled with cash stolen from the tills.
Dlamini said the two trapped men attempted to shoot their way out of the safe but failed.
He said they were arrested by members of the K9 unit, Flying Squad and local police officers who had surrounded the complex. A firearm was also recovered.
Dlamini said the two were slightly injured during the arrests and were taken to a nearby hospital under police guard.
The search for the remaining robbery gang is underway.
