A 31-year-old suspect is behind bars following an armed robbery at a petrol station in Krugersdorp.
Police Spokesperson Captain Solomon Sibuya says the incident happened early on Tuesday morning when a 41-year-old cashier was busy handing over his shift.
He says a suspect suddenly entered the store and ordered staff to be quiet and demanded cash before showing them a rifle hidden underneath his jacket.
Captain Sibuya says the rifle used in the robbery was reported stolen in Soweto 16-years ago.
The cashier handed over an undisclosed amount of cash and the suspect fled on foot.
Captain Sibuya says the cashier and some of his co-workers gave chase and were soon joined by a local security company and a police officer who happened to drive by on his way to work.
The suspect was caught hiding in someone's yard and was arrested.
Police also confiscated the rifle and an empty magazine.
The rifle, which was stolen in Soweto in 2005, will be sent for ballistic testing to see if it has been used in any other crimes.
