The Hawks in Kwazulu Natal have arrested a woman in connection with the murder of a police officer in Umlazi in May.
Police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Simphiwe Mhlongo, said the 43-year-old relative of Captain Zwelakhe Ntombela, was arrested by members of Durban Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit on Sunday.
He said Captain Ntombela was shot and killed as he arrived at his home in Umlazi on 03 May, and his private and service pistols were stolen.
"A case of murder was reported at Umlazi police station and the case docket was allocated to Hawks members from Durban Serious Organised Crime Investigation for intensive investigation," he said.
Mhlongo said the Hawks arrested 27-year-old Mzo Ntombela in July at the Umsinga area where he was hiding.
He said Captain Ntombela's firearms were recovered at the accused's homestead in KwaMaphumulo.
Ntombela was sentenced last week Monday to 20 years of direct imprisonment.
Meanwhile, the female suspect is expected to appear in the Umlazi Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, 29 August.
This weekend Police Minister Bheki Cele, called on police members to be the first to act when faced with a proportional threat.
He made the comment at the funeral service of a female police member, Sergeant Kedimetse Masilo who was one of two officers gunned down in the Free State while pursuing a criminal suspect, placing them among the 31 SAPS members who were killed in the past three months alone.
The SAPS annual commemoration of fallen officers will take place at the Union Buildings on Sunday.
