Freek Robinson honoured with lifetime achievement award

Broadcast veteran Freek Robinson has been honoured with a lifetime achievement award by KykNet at the first ever Silwerskerm Awards for Film and Television.

The dazzling award ceremony took place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre on Saturday.

In April this year, Robinson was nominated to receive a silver National Order of Ikhamanga for his contribution to journalism as his work encompassed the history of the country in motion.

A week later, however, Robinson's nomination was objected by various sectors of society, resulting in his name being withdrawn.

Robinson, who has been on our television screens since 1976, joined the KykNet family in 2010.

He was one of many presenters actors and personalities who were honoured at the glamorous gala event.

An emotional Robinson, in his acceptance speech, expressed the importance of Afrikaans and the privilege to have played a part in the industry for so many years.

Veteran actor Cedwyn Joel was also honoured with a lifetime achievement award for his contribution over decades in both film and television.

The event will be broadcast on DSTV Channel 144 on Sunday evening.
