A Grade 11 pupil in Ekangala committed suicide after he learnt that he has failed his final year examinations, the Gauteng Department of Education said on Friday.
His mother found him hanging in the garage at home and called emergency services. He was declared dead on arrival at hospital.
“The department appeals to learners not to commit suicide, and emphasise that failing a grade does not signify the end, we all fail at some point. However, we must be encouraged to start over and strive to reach our desired goals,” education MEC Panyaza Lesufi said.
“We would like to convey our most sincere condolences to the family of the departed learner.”
He added that help was available and parents, teachers should monitor pupils and intervene by contacting ChildLine on 0800-055-555 and 011-645-2000 for help.
“Trauma debriefing will be provided to all affected by this tragedy. It is regrettable that such an incident occurred, as the department is working jointly with NGOs such as ChildLine South Africa. Suicide is not an option since there is available intervention support for learners.”
