Public hearings continue in farmworkers' strike

Public hearings for the review of farmworkers' minimum wages continue in the Western Cape on Tuesday.

The first hearing took place in Grabouw on Monday night and the second in Paarl on Tuesday.

Hearings have been set down for De Doorns, Robertson, Oudtshoorn and Vredendal for the remainder of the week.

Season farmworkers want their daily minimum wage increased from R69- R150.

At Monday's meeting in Grabouw, labour relations director Thembinkosi Mkalipi said the harsh reality is that high wage demands will damage the Western Cape's agricultural sector,

Grabouw Civic Organisation member, Margaret le Roux, disagreed.

She said the farmers can afford it and that no farmers will sink if they have to pay R150 per day.
