The Eastern Cape Education Department says it's still engaging with the Provincial Transport Department to resolve the issue of the non-payment of some scholar transport service providers.

The matter has led to dozens of parents and learners at Humansdorp Senior Secondary School embarking on protest action on Wednesday morning.

Spokesperson for the Provincial Education Department, Malibongwe Mtima, says they are working on resolving the matter the quickest way possible way.

The Chairperson of the student governing body at the school in Humansdorp, Jacques Alexander, said Wednesday morning's peaceful demonstration was well attended by concerned parties.

Alexander said some 344 learners from Sea Vista, Oyster Bay, Krommedam and Honeyville were affected by the non-payment of service providers, and many learners have not been able to attend class due to the unviability of transport.

"The main purpose of the peaceful protest was to try and get the attention of the department and make them aware that they are busy violating the rights of our learners because they are failing to appoint and pay the service providers who are the scholar transport.

This has now prevented to get our learners to school because most parents can't afford to get their children to school at own cost," said Alexander.
