President Cyril Ramaphosa may have unwittingly hinted at the date for local government elections.

Ramaphosa spent the afternoon in KwaZulu-Natal on Thursday on a door-to-door campaign trail for the ANC.

He told ANC supporters gathered in Hammarsdale, west of Durban, that the party had been hard at work during the Covid-19 pandemic to protect lives and livelihoods.

He also urged supporters to make good use of their Constitutional right to vote come October.

The Independent Electoral Commission is yet to proclaim the date for local elections,

The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) wants elections to be rescheduled to next year while the EFF wants the local elections to be merged with national elections in 2024.

Meanwhile, the President says the country will be getting other coronavirus vaccines from elsewhere following the suspension of the rollout of the Johnson & Johnson jabs.

There are concerns after six women in the US who'd received the J&J shot developed blood clots afterwards.

One of them has died.

He said the government's objective is to protect the lives of South Africans.

South Africa has recorded 1 372 new coronavirus cases in the 24 hours up to Thursday evening, on the eve of the launch of the Electronic Vaccination Data System for registrations of phase two of the Covid-19 vaccine rollout.

Health Minister Zwelini Mkhize will launch the Covid-19 Electronic Vaccination Data System for people over the age of 60 on Friday.

The second phase is expected to kick off on the 17th of May.

In his daily coronavirus report, Dr Mkhize stated that there were 73 new deaths in the past 24 hours, bring the number of Covid-19 related deaths to 53 571.

Thirteen of those new deaths were in the Eastern Cape.
