Presidency responds to US Embassy terror attack warning

The financial centre of Johannesburg was top trending on Wednesday following an alert issued by the US Government of a possible terror attack being planned in Sandton.

In a short note on their website, it said they had received information that terrorists may be planning to conduct an attack targeting a large gathering of people at an unspecified location in the greater Sandton Area on Saturday or Sunday.

The Embassy said their staff had been advised to avoid crowds of people and large public gatherings in the area.

A massive gay pride parade is scheduled to take place in Sandton on Saturday which would mark the 33rd anniversary of the parade.

Several hours after the alert the South African Government took to Twitter to say that they were aware of the warning.

The message which came from the Presidency said it was the responsibility of the South African security forces to ensure that all people in the country feel safe.

"Law enforcement agencies will continue to monitor for any threats on our citizens".

Meanwhile, Johannesburg Pride said they were aware of the threats and will issue a statement on Thursday.
